KDES 104.7 and the Palm Desert Band Boosters are airing the Keep the Music Playing Radiothon to benefit local Middle School Band Programs Monday and Tuesday June 29 & 30 from their studios at 2100 E. Tahquitz Way in Palm Springs.
The Radiothon begins Monday at 6AM on the Danny Fox show and continues non-stop till 10PM, and then repeats the same schedule on Tuesday.
KDES will as usual play all the greatest hits of the 60's and 70's interspersed with poignant pre-recorded stories of Middle School children helped by local Band Programs. Voiced by local notables such as Barry Manilow, Jackie Lee Houston, Senator John Benoit, County Supervisor Roy Wilson, Trini Lopez, Hal Blaine, and many others, listeners are encouraged to call the phone bank and make pledges of money or used instruments, all of which goes directly to local youngsters.
Middle School children will be featured live in studio at times during the event, which will be an original, fun, and uplifting way to raise money. There is virtually no cost to produce the event, so 99% of the funds raised will go directly to local Middle School Band Programs.
Every caller who pledges any amount will be given two free frozen yogurts from any of the three Golden Spoons in the valley. In addition, those who make $100 "Band Booster" pledges will be given free iPod speakers as long as supplies last. The $500 "Conductor" pledge entitles the donor or whomever he chooses to come and conduct a local Middle School Band in person and meet the children they have donated to. And for a $5000 "Patron Pledge", an 80 piece marching band with full color guard will be made available anywhere in the valley to perform at a party, charity fundraiser, or even a private parade.
This is the first event of it's kind in the world to benefit Middle School Band Programs. There are great opportunites for photo ops and morning or afternoon news cut ins from the KDES control room, where we can have kids available to be interviewed and play music on air.
